New look

I've changed the template for this blog. Somebody told me that on his computer the text was difficult to read against the background. I'm trying to keep it simple (in keeping with the name) and have used a standard Blogger template. I've also tidied up the links, although there are some more I want to add.

Is this easier to read? Comments and suggestions welcome.

Looks fine to me! I prefer content over design, anyway! ;^)

So do I, and I'm quite pleased with the new 'clean' look, I think. (See how I feel tomorrow...)

Which reminds me - have you just made me put something rude in my links?

Well I don't know what it looked like before but it looks very clean and nice now. Easy to read, for whatever my opinion is worth...

I'm fine with it either way. Slight preference to the previous, but if someone else has a strong preference for the current I won't complain.

Chana: Thank you. Easy to read is what I'm after!

Tinyhands: Stop being contrary. It is now EASIER TO READ. (I hope. I haven't yet asked the guy who complained the first time, but he's away at the moment.)

Well, the other blog-format was much prettier; this one's so...well, generic and proletarian. Like something from the Soviet Union; but no matter, bec. the substance of your posts is what always brings me back for more.

But the real reason for this little 2 cents' worth is: "teaching English to reluctant university students." I am shocked! Reluctant??? I always thought that Japanese students would be highly motivated and cooperative! As a retired foreign language teacher here in the States, I always believed that the only 3 groups worth teaching would be the Japanese, the Chinese and the Koreans. Well, it looks like the noxious American influence has even infected what I thought was the last stronghold of sensible culture. Pity!

Hi, just came in via BE.

Personally, it looks fine to me. Keep it simple, is what I say!

Simple, generic, boring... oh well - good enough for me! Maybe I'll make it prettier later, when I'm feeling brave. For now it will have to do because I don't want to go through that again for a while!

To Anon, regarding reluctant university students: I don't think it's American influence. Japanese universities have been famous for a long time as 'playgrounds' - a holiday between the rigours of high school and the slavery of work. Nobody really expects university students to learn anything. Getting into a 'good' university is the main point.

This is changing, though. Veeery slowly. And if you get Japanese exchange students (i.e. not in Japan), they'll probably be very good, because they know that foreign universities are different and you're expected to study there. Also, the ones who really want to learn go abroad if they can afford it.

I thought your last entry in the comments was really interesting. I had no Japanese universities were like that. I love learning about other cultures, so I hope you don't mind if I come around to read more often. I teach ESL in the States, so thanks for the links to other ESL sites on your blog! I'm a new teacher, so I need all the help I can get!

My reply should have said "I had no IDEA Japanese universities were like that." I really need to start reading what I type...especially before I send it!
