Kaka

I have been looking at some photos I took at the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary, a fabulous place I can recommend whole-heartedly to anybody visiting Wellington. (Or living in Wellington, for that matter.)

If you visit, you, too, could be treated to the sight of an acutely threatened Kaka cleaning its toenails.

Did you see the cave wetas?

I've been trying to decide if the kaka looks more or less threatened than he (or his mates) did when I was last there five years ago or so. Hard to tell, really.

Gee, when I'm acutely threatened, the last thing I think about is giving myself a pedicure. Or maybe not. I haven't actually ever been acutely threatened. ;-)

Nice-looking bird. It's sad that so many species are threatened or disappearing, but I find that I can't dwell on it, on the loss of tigers or kakas or frogs or polar bears - or even cod or honey bees. Too much to take in, not enough power to change it.
