I have noticed that I get a lot of hits from people searching "present simple" and "ESL," and assume that this is language teachers looking for ideas or lesson plans. The following links are good places to start.
This is a page specifically dealing with teaching simple present and present progressive. I have not tried any of these, but there are a lot of ideas here, and they look good. At the very least you will be inspired.
Doris: The water is warm and mucky, not very tempting. They are dredging/concreting upstream again. They are ALWAYS dredging/conreting upstream. They've been doing it for years. I think that's what they use our taxes for. Concreting rivers is a big thing, here.
I quite like warm - but can leave out the mucky. Concreting rivers? Puts me in mind of all the riverlets in London (England) that have been built upon and forgotten only to creep up in some cellar a century later.

Very cute, as usual.
I so want to reach into the water and feel those smooth pebbles.
Is the water particularly cold, warm or neutral?
