Experiment

Think of a random number between 1 and 20.

Write it down.

Now read the comments.

Why did you choose 17?

I read about The Power of 17 on Cosmic Variance this morning, before The Man got up.

The Man staggered off to the bathroom, still half asleep. I quickly wrote, "Why did you choose 17?" on a bit of paper, and when he came back I asked him the question I just asked you.

"17," he said.

I showed him the bit of paper.

The thing is, it would ONLY work for him first thing in the morning when he's not thinking properly yet. He KNOWS this stuff. He does magic tricks all the time, and has read the books. That's why he laughed when I showed him the paper. He knew he'd been tricked.

I was still surprised, though. I didn't really expect it to work.

Wow! That's freaky!

Oh sorry I chose 14, but maybe that means I am freaky, too.

I picked 3. :)

Since I've seen this kind of thing before, I chose π(pi). After all, you never specified that it had to be a whole number. ;-)

I picked 15.

I wrote down 12 but 17 did go through my mind!

Patrick chose 11

James chose 15

Horrible, awkward children!

Mr Mac chose 17!

The first number that went through my mind was 17. Scary.

Cheryl: You are definitely freaky. You have destroyed my precious theory, which begins with people NOT choosing even numbers. Wiccachicky may have got it wrong, but at least she went for an odd number! And so did Daldianus, although his was divisible, and the second part of my theory just got a little weaker, too.

Ms Mac was cheating. 17 went through her mind and she RESISTED it. You should never resist a random number. It's illegal.

If I had known The Science Pundit was going to be doing this, I would have specified whole numbers. (Actually just after posting I thought about it, because I was fairly sure Radioactive Jam would come along and guess π, but then I thought why spoil his fun? He's probably going to ask for his monkeys back now.)

Of course, people here are far more likely to leave a comment if they do choose 17, so there's a bit of a confirmation bias here. :-)

I think "comment likelihood" is high regardless of number chosen. And for the record, "17." Normally I would choose pi or similar but my internal troublemaker is on the fritz.

No need to worry about a monkey recall; in fact - you want more? No problem!

Heh! I picked π as well, and this was before I read this thread!

I chose 18 and Colin chose 19. Are you going to send your results to Cosmic Variance?

Badaunt said...

Potentilla: Yes, as soon as I get them all compiled with the ones I'm collecting in RL as well.

Sorry, I chose 18. There were 18 comments and it was just staring at me.
